As a professional photographer, I am often asked what camera, lens, and accessories I recommend for moms, bloggers, and hobbyist who want a great DSLR but don’t need a full professional $30,000 camera set up! Below are my top pics for each category.
For the camera and lens, I’ve included links to Amazon as well; however, I always recommend purchasing from Target for big items like these as, should something be wrong it with, the return process is much easier. (Plus you can get 5% off if you have a RedCard … and who doesn’t?!)
Amazon offers a bundle pack which includes a bag and a few other little things (that you likely won’t use). As I mentioned, I prefer purchasing things like this from Target as, should you need to make a return, it’s easy to do so in store.
For $300 more you can get the newest release of the Rebel series, the T7i which you can purchase HERE. However, if that puts it over your budget, the T6i is a really great camera and the differences aren’t substantial.
This camera offers beautiful photo and video capabilities. It will allow you to shoot in manual if you want to start doing so or full auto mode (and various in-betweens) if you prefer that route! It has every function you’ll want and need and produces quality images!
Your lens choice matters just as much (even MORE in my opinion!) than the camera body itself. As long as I could use my choice of lens, if I had to use the camera body listed above for my professional shoots, it’s unlikely that you’d ever be able to see a difference in the photos I take with my pro camera. The 50mm is my go-to lens, and this consumer grade lens can’t be beat at just $125!
If you’re wanting that “blurry background” look (known as shallow depth of field if you want to sound like the pros!), this lens can help you get it!
A sturdy tripod is a must if you plan to take any self portraits of yourself or your family. (I take most all of my family photos using a tripod!)
This is the remote I use and love. I set my camera on the tripod and simply click the button on the remote (hidden in my hand) to take our family photos!
You’re going to need a great camera bag to protect your gear, and these are some of my favorites! They offer all the protection you’ll need for your camera and lenses, but they don’t scream camera bag!
Your camera will come with a strap that is plenty good enough; however, if you want to customize it a little, then I highly recommend these! There are lots of colors to choose from, and you can even have your name (or logo) included! Plus, this company gives back to a really great cause with every strap purchased!
